Joyce Leggett

The story behind the inspiration...

Joyce Leggett, the founder of Joyce Leggett Art, is an African American that is a self-taught artist from Excel, Alabama, now residing in Pensacola, Florida. Her journey has been one of grit and desire. As a child, she was unable to take art classes. Nonetheless, Joyce still won first place in an art contest when she was eight. This early success was the impetus needed to affirm her talent . . .

Through the years, Joyce found herself in a career path and multiple jobs that didn't quite fulfill her dreams and were are a far cry from creating art. But always, a love of creativity remained and she was able to become an art teacher for Elementary children. It was only less than a year ago she was given the opportunity to have her original artwork displayed at the Pensacola Museum of Art that featured a special exhibit for Escambia County art teachers . . .

Joyce was hesitant at first, but at this time, she had also came to learn about another artist that would soon become the inspiration that living your dreams has no expiration date. This artist was Alma W. Thomas, who at 75 years old had her first solo exhibition at Howard University. She was the first African American woman to have her solo exhibition at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art. Her paintings have been featured in the White House multiple times. Alma's perseverance for her dreams became the spark that lit Joyce's inspiration to never give up on your dreams . . .

So in her fifties, Joyce had her original artwork featured in the PMA for the first time. And everything has blossomed since that moment- God has opened doors to bring her on a path to become an emerging artist. She is now a recognized artist and has been selected for the highly esteemed Great Gulf Coast Arts Festival of 2024. There's no telling how this artist will continue to inspire others- whether it's hanging her exceptional art in your home or hearing her story that whatever your age, it's never too late to pursue your dreams.
